Oil-based, petroleum based and petroleum jelly are all words used to describe petroleum-based lubricants. These lubricants are safe for some uses and not for others, and it’s important to know where and when they are appropriate.

First and foremost, oil-based lubes are never safe to use with condoms and with many different toys. Jelly, silicon, and plastic can all be damaged by petroleum-based lubricants, so never use those toys with this type of lubricant.

Petroleum-based lubricants are fine for anal sex and for using toys in the anus, but not for vaginal lubrication. The petroleum-based lubricant can alter the pH of the vagina, making it likely that the woman will get a bacterial infection, so do not use petroleum-based lubricants in or around the vaginal area.

Petroleum-based lubricants are perfect for stainless steel toys and, particularly, for stainless steel toys that are meant to be used in the anus. Other than that, however, this type of lubricant should be avoided with other types of sex toys and it should only be used during anal penetration. You can find plenty of other lubricants available that are excellent choices for vaginal use and for use on more sensitive types of sex toys.
